I was just doing some research into Jimmy Cliff (prompted by the comment “RIP Jimmy Cliff” on the Youtube clip for this week’s MPM – Jimmy is still very much alive) and I found this nugget from Wikipedia:

“His recording of ‘You Can Get It If You Really Want’ was used as a campaign anthem by the Sandinista National Liberation Front in the 1990 election in Nicaragua (they lost).”

The song was also used in a Burger King ad campaign. Not sure what that says about the world.

Courtesy of the one Citizen D, here’s a video for the Rancid cover of the Jimmy Cliff hit The Harder They Come. This isn’t a straight live video, but seems to cover slips from the entire show. See if you can name all the acts in the video!

Some more Waldos to spot: The Bosstones’ horn section ably assisting Rancid, a Chinese dragon getting funky to the ska/punk beat, and awkward pre-song chatter.

Also, if you get the reference in the title, buy yourself a cookie and hang your head in shame.

Hey all, I finally updated the banner to reflect the new show time. As you can probably tell, my MS Paint talents are a bit lacking. So, if you consider yourself artistically inclined, we have an offer for you. Make us a new banner, and get a free CD!

Was just checking through the various stats for the site, including the search terms people have used to find the site. Among the normal results, this was included:

is music harmful? 2

I’m very curious how we got linked with that. Let me just say that Rude Radio (and by extension ska and reggae music) is not only not harmful, but often beneficial, with it’s high vitamin levels and low saturated fats.

It’s sometimes weird thinking that ska music was truly popular once. Even in the third wave it was rare to see any real exposure of ska bands on mainstream TV or radio. Back during the Two-Tone era, however, some of the biggest bands in ska were simply the biggest bands around. Take this clip from the UK’s Top Of The Pops (kind of a proto-TRL, but with good bands) from around 1978 or so. Here you have The Selecter doing one of their biggest hits on national TV. Just imagine that…

No dissrespect to any of you Sean Paul fans out there, but I slightly giggled when I read this article.  Enjoy.

Ok not really.

The Gleaner has info on the Harder They Come stage play returning to the UK. Other special events include performances from dub poet Linton Kwesi Johnson and a look at Jamaican cinema while the play shows in Birmingham.

Just another one of the many times I wished I lived (or at least wintered) in England.

Sweet Lord Mike, sometimes it feels like I have a nose for the truly bizarre. It’s a gift and a curse, although I’m not sure which in this case.

You young pups out there probably have never heard of Beach Blanket Bingo, the 1965 movie starring Frankie Avalon and Annette Funicello. I recommend it, if for no other reason as Annette was a fox back then (and not shabby now for being 100) and you can see classic comedians like Don Rickles and Paul Lynde at thier prime.

Anyway, for some reason someone decided that a sequel was necessary, so in 1987 Back To The Beach was hatched. I haven’t seen it, but I may have to find it now. This scene features Annette talking to some bikini-clad mid-80’s beach girls (including a pre-Full House Lori Loughlin, not that you can tell from this clip) about “the Jamiaca Ska” which naturally turns into a video for Fishbone’s version of the Byron Lee classic, Jamaica Ska. Naturally.

A side note: Invaders fans will catch the sound bite used in the song Ska Fever from their final album All That’s Normal Turns To Chaos.
