November 2007

From RiddimJamaica:

Officials at the US Library of Congress has selected the Wailers album “Burnin”, as part of its 2007 collection of audio recordings to be preserved in its National Recording registry.

The album which was released in 1974, was a prelude to the groups internationally acclaimed album “Catch A Fire”, both of which have sold several million copies worldwide.

Memorable tracks featured on the album include “Get Up Stand Up”, Duppy Conqueror, and the ever popular “I shot The Sheriff”, which was covered in 1974 by American Folk Singer, Eric Clapton.

The Wailers Band was comprised of trench town musicians, whose most noted members included Bob Marley, Peter Tosh and Bunny Wailer. The group eventually signed with Island Records and within a decade became one of the world’s most popular music bands. In 2000, the band’s album “Exodus” was hailed as the album of the 21st century.

The group disbanded shortly before the death of its front man, Bob Marley who succumbed to cancer-related symptoms in 1983.

Sorry for the late post again, but the Thanksgiving Holiday done knocked me for a loop. This week’s clip is from a Skatalites performance in London in 1984. The opening is cut strangely, but once the song properly starts up everything is gravy.

Hello Kids-

Do you like violence?

Wanna watch me spin music, but not stick anything in my eyelids?

Well then…

Come down to the Minneapolis Convention Center on December 1st, 2007. I (Dj Citizen D) will be playing some tunes for the North Star Roller Girls during the bout!

I’ll post more details when I know more.

Hope to see everyone down there!

Another little tidbit for you on this *cough* Monday *cough*. This is a clip from what appears to be a documentary about British music in the 60’s-70’s, but I’m not sure. If you know where this came from, please email me.

In preparation for the upcoming Hometown Throwdown shows coming up, Mighty Mighty Bosstones members have been doing a series of short documentaries for Music Intelligence. In the latest episode, Dicky and the boys talk about why they went on hiatus, what they’ve been doing since then, and why they are coming back.

As if that weren’t enough, there is a nugget from a new song, “Don’t Worry Desmond Dekker” from the upcoming rarities album Medium Rare, due out on an auspicious day, December 18th.

Pop-ska band Suburban Legends had their van, trailer, and over $40K of band equipment stolen Sunday night. This is the second time the band’s van has been robbed (The previous incident was in June of 2006, and the van was set on fire after the robbery).

They are currently on tour with Streetlight Manifesto, who have themselves been twice robbed (once in October of 2005 in Orlando, then a month later in Paris, France). The band announced they will be renting equipment to finish out the tour.

Here it is, the first of what will hopefully be a series of ska and reggae related movies. This was a collection of footage that some enterprising rude boy put together. It’s got a nice soundtrack and some cool footage. Hope you enjoy!

If you find some footage you think would work for this feature, go ahead and let me know! Just email ruderadio@radiok.org
